How to Stay Sane When the Weather Keeps You Inside

Crappy, cold and rainy weather is inevitable come fall & winter. While there are plenty of beautiful days to take advantage of, the fact of the matter is, some days you will be stuck inside (maybe even a few days in a row). I know for me, once I’ve been inside for more than a few hours I start to feel crazy. So, how do you stay sane when you stay inside? There is no full-proof method, but I have a few ideas that could at least help a little.

  1. Make your indoor space colorful! Colder months are the perfect time to redecorate your space with a little color. We aren’t talking about classic fall and winter colors, but if you are someone who tends to be down during the colder weather, colors like bright yellow or green can bring a little happiness when you are stuck inside. In a study from the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, adults reported feeling happier around those two colors - how cool is that?

  2. Cold-weather-prep your home. Make sure you have everything you could possibly need if you can’t leave the house. Plenty of blankets, a space heater, hot drinks, a crockpot to make yummy soups, fuzzy socks and sweaters - the possibilities are endless. Come the first big snow, you’ll thank yourself.

  3. Get in a workout! Whether you can get to the gym or not, you can workout anywhere. Do a fun fitness routine on youtube or look up a quick circuit to do. Exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy!

  4. If you can leave the house, take advantage of the weather to get in some fun indoor activities like the movies or a museum. You won’t feel like you're missing out on good weather and you’ll have something fun to do for an afternoon.

  5. Open up the blinds! Don’t keep yourself in a dark space for too long. Even if it’s cloudy, letting some natural light into your house will definitely improve your mood.

  6. Head to a coffeehouse and splurge on a fancy drink or pastry. Now, while I don’t recommend getting a 400 calorie drink and 500 calorie muffin, there are definitely ways to treat yourself and splurge responsibly.

  7. Lastly, ask for help. If you are feeling out of control and way in the depths of cold-weather sadness, it’s ok to ask for help from a professional and you should. They are here to help us!

Well peeps, those are some of my ideas to get you through the cold-weather seasons. Let me know what you do to stay sane inside. Much joy.
